NHL coach: Domino game could hit Rangers

John Hynes was fired by the Nashville Predators on Tuesday and could soon be in contact with the New York area again as the Rangers have received approval to speak to him about their vacant position as head coach.

As the New York Post reported Wednesday, the blueshirts didn’t think twice about the opportunity to grant an interview to the man who led the “Preds” for four seasons. The 48-year-old would therefore be in the sights of the Big Apple organization as the successor to Gerard Gallant, who left his club a few weeks ago by mutual agreement with the club.

Hynes served as the head coach of the New Jersey Devils from 2015 to 2019, who incidentally knocked out the Rangers in the first round this spring. In Tennessee, he saw his team fail to make the playoffs despite 92 points overall. If he gets the job in Manhattan, he will meet general manager Chris Drury, who was his teammate at Boston University from 1994-1997.

Other candidates who might be considered for a job in New York include Peter Laviolette, who has led the Washington Capitals for the past three seasons and also oversaw the Islanders for the first two years of his career as head coach.
