NHL Sidney Crosby wants Erik Karlsson in Pittsburgh

NHL: Erik Karlsson on his departure?

It is no secret. Sweden defenseman Erik Karlsson wants to leave the San Jose Sharks. However, with four years left on his contract, which is worth $11.5 million on the team’s payroll, the full-back may have to wait before changing jerseys.

And there are several teams who would dream of adding the Swede to their roster.

In fact, Karlsson confirmed to Swedish newspaper Expressen on Saturday that he had held talks with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Toronto Maple Leafs, Carolina Hurricanes and Seattle Kraken.

“I spoke to those affected in Pittsburgh and [Kyle] Of course, Dubas is one of them, he said. I try to get as much information as possible from the interested teams. How you see me what you want? I will make a decision based on the information I have received. When it comes to that, I want to make the best decision for me and my family.

“I believe they will come to an agreement. But it takes time and it’s a process I don’t really understand, so I haven’t tried to get involved in it. […] I get updates, but it’s conversations that are happening. How it works, what they’re doing now, and what’s going to happen, I don’t have an answer to that. I have to wait and see what happens. I know what my family and I want. We just hope to get a chance.”

Apparently, the team’s new general manager, Mike Grier, is well acquainted with the situation and appears to be working toward a transaction. However, Karlsson’s contract is a major obstacle to any negotiation.

“I love San Jose, but I’ve never won in the past. I want this opportunity now as I near the end of my career. I’ve been talking to Mike about this since day one. He has no problem with that. We understand each other and will remain so, no matter what happens in the future.”

Will Karlsson join Sidney Crosby in Pittsburgh? Let’s not forget that Jason Spezza, who once played with Karlsson in Ottawa, is part of the Penguins’ management team. Or Toronto? If so, Brad Treliving will have to part ways with a major contract. In Carolina with ex-teammate Brent Burns? Or with the surprising Kraken? Will he stay with the Sharks in the short term?

There are several open questions. But Karlsson exits the Norris Trophy with a stellar 101-point season.

Until his future is sealed, the rumor mill will be spinning.
