NHL: Matthews pays the Flames

Auston Matthews was instrumental in a win that brought a lot of good things to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday night against the Flames in Calgary.

The American scored his fourth hat trick of the season in his team's 4-3 win.

The Leafs were on a four-game losing streak heading into their meeting with the Alberta team, and early in the game everything seemed to indicate they were headed for another loss.

The Flames took the lead and even took a 2-0 lead in the first period thanks to Yegor Sharangovich and Nazem Kadri.

However, Matthews started his team's rebellion, cutting the deficit to one goal with 1 minute and 36 seconds left in the first period. The latter equalized early in the second period before giving the visitors a 4-2 lead by intercepting Matthew Knies' return shot.

The top pick in the 2016 draft class has now scored 37 goals this season and is headed for a 70-goal season.

Mitch Marner also flashed the red light for the visitors.

Jonathan Huberdeau picked up two assists in the loss and now has seven points in his last five games. Andrew Mangiapane was the other to bring success to the local favorites.
