Ice hockey fans are excited about a first international competition with players from the National League (NHL) since 2016 and will certainly welcome the upcoming hosting of a world championship.
The rumors point in this direction. In fact, former NHL goalkeeper and current ESPN network analyst Kevin Weekes confided on the X platform (formerly Twitter) that negotiations are underway to organize a World Cup in 2025. Only skaters from the Bettman circuit would take part.

However, according to Weekes, the event could take place between the Super Bowl and March Madness. This could maximize the potential excitement surrounding the tournament.

I have been told that discussions are currently underway between the parties involved about a possible scaled-down hosting of the World Cup of Hockey @NHL Players, perhaps in 2025 we will have a possible schedule between Superbowl and March Madness. #HockeyTwitter pic.twitter.com/U5jGbjHoGn— Kevin Weekes (@KevinWeekes) November 1, 2023
As a reminder, NHL players have not competed in the Olympics since 2014 in Sochi. The last time they had the opportunity to don the jerseys of their respective countries was in 2016 during the World Cup in Toronto.
Canada secured the top honor by defeating Europe in the final, winning the series 2-0.
