The pilot announced that Wheeler underwent surgery on Friday. The 36-year-old forward was injured after receiving a throw from teammate Josh Morrissey in the team’s win against the Nashville Predators on Thursday.

The American had left the game in the second period before making an unexpected comeback in the third period. He has 26 points since the start of the season, including nine goals in 29 games.

Bowness also said defenseman Nate Schmidt will be out for four to six weeks with an upper body injury after Preds forward Tanner Jeannot was checked. He did not suffer a concussion.
