Nica in the United States is launching a campaign for Mattel to produce a Sheynnis Palacios Barbie La Prensa Nicaragua

Nicaraguan Susana Sánchez, who lives in Southern California (USA) and is a graphic designer, made a sketch of Sheynnis Palacios, Miss Universe 2023, in Barbie style so that the company of this brand can make a doll in honor of the Nicaraguan holding the world title.

Sánchez, 46, decided to start a campaign on Change.org to collect 5,000 signatures so that Mattel would take interest and launch the version of the doll in honor of Palacios, 23, who died on November 18 in “ The Redeemer” was crowned. “Creating a Barbie that represents Sheynnis Palacios would not only honor her achievements, but also provide much-needed representation to the Central American children who play with Barbies.” “It could be the start of an entire collection dedicated to honoring the “Dedicated to the diverse cultures and inspiring personalities of Central America,” Sánchez wrote in the Change.org description.

In the description, Sánchez also emphasized that Palacios deserves this recognition because “in addition to being the winner of the prestigious Miss Universe title, she is also an active mental health activist and audiovisual producer who saves animals in her free time.” Love for her Nicaraguan heritage shines brightly and she would be a fantastic addition to Barbie’s collection.”

Sánchez told LA PRENSA by phone that “it would be my dream to play with a Nicaraguan Barbie, and now that Sheynnis (Palacios) has won, it's a good time.” She adds that she is making this request because ” “I'm sick and tired of the fact that in the United States you don't know where Nicaragua is or you can't show it on the map,” she says.

Who is Susana Sanchez?

Born in Los Angeles, California, Sánchez has been a visual journalist for 22 years. His father is Nicaraguan and his mother is Guatemalan. According to a Los Angeles Times publication, she is the art director of this media company. He also “designs and runs Envelope magazine.”

She also served as art director at The Washington Post and editor-at-large at the South Florida Sun Sentinel. “His work there earned him several awards from the Society of Newspaper Design,” it says publication.

The Nicaraguan and Guatemalan is the owner of her own design company, Designing Chica, where she promotes the cultures of her two countries. At 46, he has two children, a 10-year-old and a 12-year-old. He has visited Nicaragua twice, but his parents taught him the culture of both countries.

Why do you want a unique Barbie?

Sánchez explains on the Change.org account: “As a half-Guatemalan-Nicaraguan girl, you don't see your culture represented anywhere unless it's something political and bad.” I remember her making fun of me as a child made because my culture was different, mestizo,” it says.

He reiterates that the Palacios crown meant putting Nicaragua on the map. “To this day, some people don’t know that Nicaragua exists. On Saturday evening (November 18, 2023), everyone got to know Nicaragua and respected its name,” he says.

Sánchez also reports that this is the first crown for Nicaragua and the first for Central America. “I grew up watching these beauty pageants with my mom and my aunts, and I always hoped that Miss Guatemala or Miss Nicaragua would come out on top,” she says. “Although the country is small, Sheynnis has inspired a lot,” he told LA PRENSA.
