Austin. It took some persuasion for Nicolas Cage to play a fictionalized version of himself in the action/comedy The Unbearable Weight of Great Talent. On-screen Cage is struggling to find work and has accumulated a significant hotel debt. Due to lack of money, he agrees to fly to Spain for a rich man’s birthday in exchange for $1 million. The film then turns into an action movie with a tone similar to some of Cage’s films. A tribute to his earlier films.
“It was stressful, it was terrifying,” he told attendees at the film’s premiere late Saturday night at SXSW in Austin. The film is slated to release on April 22nd. I’m in the cinema. And because it scared the hell out of me, I knew I had to do it.”
Cage explained his concerns on the red carpet near Austin’s Paramount Theatre. He worried that director Tom Gormican “wanted to do something like a sketch for SNL and make fun of me or make fun of my work.”

According to the actor, Gormican convinced Cage by letter. “It was clear to me in this letter that he was more interested in genuine interest in some of the earlier work and the celebration of it, with elements of the pathos that I went through, that people read about or didn’t read about,” Cage said.
“And so I said, ‘OK, I think maybe there’s something here.’ On top of that, I have a kind of mantra that is that what you’re most likely to fear – most likely, as long as (it’s) within reason (and) doesn’t hurt yourself or anyone else – is the most important thing. something you should aim for because you will probably learn something.”
Cage said that the screen version is quite contrasty.
“There is no version of Nicolas Cage who doesn’t want to spend time with his family. And that was the biggest split between Tom and me when we were making the film, which is that I’m not like that. But he said, “Well, it’s a movie and this character develops from A to B and we have to see him grow.” This is a good argument. It was a good moment.”

Cage said he didn’t drop as many “F-bombs” as the imaginary version. “I’m like, ‘I don’t actually use that kind of profanity all the time. What is it about?” He says, “Well, the character is kind of neurotic.” Okay, but I’m at home. I read books. I spend time with my cat, my family and my wife. He says, “But it’s not fun. I want a neurotic Nic Cage.”
Gormican co-wrote the screenplay with Kevin Atten before they met Cage.
“When Kevin and I were writing the script, the whole time we were just thinking, ‘I think at least this will make our friends laugh, and this is a movie we’d like to see,'” he said. on the carpet. “We didn’t know him. We never met him. He didn’t know about the project. He didn’t subscribe to it. the more interesting.”
