Contrary to all odds, So You Think You Can Dance will return for Season 17 … but will do so without co-creator Nigel Lithgow in the judges’ rostrum.
IN tweet on fridayLythgoe – who has so far served as a judge on each season of Fox’s competition series – says he has not been invited to play the role for the show’s recently announced 17th run.
“I am so excited that America’s young, ambitious dance talent will start working with some of our greatest creative choreographers,” the EP wrote. “I am personally sad that I was not asked to be on the jury this season. I don’t know who will say “Cue Music”, but I wish them success. “
Fox did not respond immediately to a request for comment from TVLine.
Although other dance professionals – including ballroom specialist Mary Murphy, choreographer Mia Michaels and industry veterinarian Paula Abdul – have sat at the judges’ table for several seasons, Lithgow is the only person to judge SYTYCD each season. When Season 17 was confirmed earlier this week, it was unclear whether some celebrities from previous seasons would return as referees, nor was it confirmed that longtime host Kat Deeley would return as host.
In June 2020, Fox abruptly interrupted season 17, citing COVID concerns. “SYTYCD season 17 production will not continue due to health and government constraints in response to the COVID-19 pandemic,” a Fox spokesman said at the time. “As a result, while we look forward to his return this summer, we are unable to meet the standards we have set for viewers and contestants in light of the show’s unique format, complex production schedule and limited time.”
However, the show will be on Fox’s program this summer; the official premiere date is TBD.
