In a press release read on the radio on Thursday, the ruling military junta announced that the operations of international organizations and NGOs had been suspended due to the “current security situation.”
The military regime ruling in Niger announced on Thursday evening the cessation of all activities by international organizations, NGOs and UN agencies in military “zones of operation” due to the “current security situation”.
“Due to the current security situation and current operational commitment of the Nigerian Armed Forces, the Ministry informs international organizations, national and international NGOs and UN agencies present in Niger that all activities and/or movements in the operational areas are temporarily suspended. “ says a press release from the Ministry of the Interior, which was read on national radio, without naming the affected regions.
The “deterioration of the security situation”
Niger has been subject to violence from jihadist groups for several years, in the southwestern part near the borders with Burkina Faso and Mali and in the southeastern part near the Lake Chad basin and the border with Nigeria.
The soldiers who overthrew President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26 justified their seizure of power with the “deterioration of the security situation.” There have been repeated attacks since the coup. On August 15, 17 soldiers were killed in an attack near Burkina Faso.
