Although the earliest trailer of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness strongly hinted that a Stephen Strange variant would be the film’s great evil, the presence of the Scarlet Witch in the story and the way WandaVision ended implied that also that Wanda Maximoff it might have something to do with the multiverse breaking into a million pieces. While the latest Multiverse of Madness commercial doesn’t explicitly state how the reality surrounding Earth’s magical heroes is being shattered, it might explain why by confirming the return of two interesting characters.
Although Wanda and Strange haven’t spent most of their screen time together up to this point, the new trailer shows that the two have quite a few things in common. For example, they both have recurring dreams of (what appears to be) other universes only to wake up in their home reality, which feels like nightmares. Unlike Strange’s night terrors, which all seem to revolve around apocalyptic scenarios and his love for Christine Palmer, Wanda’s dreams are haunted by visions of their twin sons, Billy and Tommy, who apparently still exist in other dimensions. The finale of WandaVision made it clear that even though Wanda was forced to undo the magic that made her sons exist in that particular dimension, they were still somewhere in the multiverse and could call upon her.
The MCU’s rules about whether humans should be messing around in other realities aren’t exactly set in stone yet. However, it stands to reason that a grieving witch trying to get her children back by stealing copies of them from other universes isn’t the best idea. And it goes against the natural order in a way that might upset some important people.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hits theaters on May 6th.
