Eight killed in shooting at US shopping center

Nine killed in US shopping mall shooting

A man killed eight people in a shooting at a Texas mall. According to authorities, a policeman who happened to be at the scene shot the alleged attacker.

A gunman shot and killed eight people at a large mall in the Dallas, Texas suburbs. According to local authorities, seven people were injured, three of whom are in critical condition.

According to police, an officer who was working elsewhere at the time heard gunshots in the shopping complex on Saturday afternoon. He immediately intervened, caught the shooter and “turned it off”. Allen Police Chief Brian Harvey said he was believed to have acted alone.

The background to the crime initially remained unclear. Authorities also did not give further details about the victims and the perpetrator of the crime. Television footage showed people being ushered out of the sprawling shopping area. Eyewitnesses told CNN they heard dozens of gunshots and saw a man dressed in black firing.

The US has long faced massive levels of gun violence. Rampages and deadly shootouts are part of everyday life. Larger attacks of this type – for example, in schools, supermarkets, churches, nightclubs or at large public events – regularly lead to discussions about tightening gun laws. So far without success. Firearms are readily available and widely advertised in the United States.
