“At this point, there is no agreement on a solution,” US Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations Robert Wood said at the end of the Security Council’s closed consultations on Gaza. “We have discussed humanitarian pauses and are interested in finding such language, but there is disagreement in the Security Council as to whether this is acceptable.”
“Given the seriousness of the humanitarian situation, we call for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, which must lead to a ceasefire and access to aid,” French UN Ambassador Nicolas de Riviere said after two hours of closed-door consultations at the Security Council. “Given the urgency, France is organizing a humanitarian conference for the people of Gaza on November 9,” he added: “Israel has the right to defend itself by respecting humanitarian laws. We need to protect civilians and to do that we need a humanitarian. Ceasefire, pause humanitarian, whatever you want to call it, and it has to happen now.”
The Security Council must act,” Chinese UN Ambassador Zhang Jun, acting president of the Security Council, said at the end of the closed consultations along with Emirati Ambassador Lana Zaki Nusseibeh. The two countries requested the meeting “to express deep concern about Israel’s ongoing attacks on refugee camps, schools, hospitals, UN facilities and other civilian facilities in Gaza.” “Discussions on the draft resolution continue and we continue to try to resolve differences between members of the Council,” Nusseibeh specified.
