No more Chernobyl IAEA chief Grossi wants permanent nuclear mission at accident reactor

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) wants to send a team of experts to Chernobyl on a permanent basis for the first time. The measure is part of a plan to deploy specialists to all Ukrainian nuclear power plants. The IAEA has been present in Zaporizhia since September. In this way, the UN organization is trying to prevent further Russian attacks on Ukrainian nuclear reactors.

The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, spoke about a “very special” day: “This is my sixth visit since the beginning of the war. This already shows how important it is for the IAEA and for me to guarantee security in the entire infrastructure of Ukraine “, he said.

Chernobyl is the site of the worst nuclear reactor accident in history, which took place in 1986. In late February, at the start of the war, Russia temporarily occupied the nuclear power plant – and fueled concerns around the world about further devastating incidents.

Negotiations are currently underway to establish a buffer zone around Sporizhia to prevent a potential reactor accident.
