WASHINGTON a threat, but also, according to Washington, a signal of insecurity: no more weapons to Ukraine or unforeseeable consequences. On Tuesday, April 12, the Russian Embassy delivered a diplomatic note to the US State Department. Bureaucratic headline: Russia’s concerns over massive shipments of arms and military equipment to the Kiev regime. Intimidating Content: We call on the United States and its allies to stop the irresponsible militarization of Ukraine, which is having unpredictable consequences for regional and international security. In other words, Vladimir Putin announces that he is ready to escalate the conflict.
A small thought comes from the Russian Foreign Ministry for Finland and Sweden: their security would not increase with NATO membership. Are these warnings to be taken seriously? In the last few days there have only been signs of escalation. Negotiations seem to have broken up.
The princes of Moscow
Only Pope Francis insists on a ceasefire. Putin, on the other hand, has ordered the bombing to resume in Kyiv as well, in response to Ukraine’s attacks on villages on Russian territory, the Kremlin said. Meanwhile, the new package of American weapons is already on its way. The first shipments should arrive between today and tomorrow, the Pentagon said. They are deadly tools, like heavy artillery, 11 M17 helicopters, 300 drone kamikaze and more. the qualitative leap that Volodymyr Zelenskyy has long demanded and which is now obviously alarming Putin’s generals. The Russian embassy, after 52 days of indiscriminate destruction and massacres of civilians, is now rediscovering the strict principles of international law that prohibit the supply of arms to war zones. The text refers to several missile launch systems that were never actually delivered to the Ukrainians. Incidentally, the Russian document descends into propaganda, accusing Westerners of arming Ukraine’s radical nationalists, extremists and bandits. Additionally, the United States and NATO are lobbying to halt negotiations so they can continue the killings and isolate Russia.
Biden’s three scenarios
The Biden administration reacted to the Russian letter with some distance. State Department spokesman Ned Price notes: Nothing will persuade President Biden to stop supporting Ukraine.
However, the Kremlin’s move is grafted onto the three scenarios currently under the attention of the American administration. First, the Russians could prepare to attack convoys with US weapons. In this case, the diplomatic note would be a kind of preemptive justification. Second, the Kremlin’s response is perhaps the best proof of how well the supply is working. The United States is therefore preparing for continuity, including with the involvement of its European allies. Foreign Minister Antony Blinken would have warned partners that the war could drag on throughout 2022
The Atomic Mystery
Third and tricky step: the danger of the atomic bomb. This is where the confusion increases. In an interview with CNN, Zelenskyy said that Putin could use tactical nuclear devices or chemical weapons: the world should prepare for this eventuality, for him human lives have no value; it would be an attack not only on Ukraine. We shouldn’t be afraid, but we should be prepared. We are prepared. A few hours earlier, however, one of his advisors had specified that there were no concrete signs of a nuclear attack. CIA director William Burns also reiterated yesterday that Putin’s possible use of nuclear weapons should not be taken lightly. Add: Currently we don’t see any signs in this direction.
We asked Stuart Kaufman, a University of Delaware professor and student of Putinism, for his opinion: I don’t think the Russian leader will detonate a nuclear bomb. It would not change the outcome of the war and would have to face the West’s response, which by that point would be drastic. No gas supplies and heavy military intervention, perhaps even direct, in support of Zelenskyy.
