A man has been arrested for hit-and-run and driving under the influence following a collision that left three people, including one seriously, injured in Shawinigan, Mauricie, on January 1.
The event occurred around 1 a.m. on Monday, the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) reported in a press release on Thursday.
The driver of a pickup truck was traveling quickly on Route 153 in Shawinigan toward Saint-Boniface. After overtaking without permission, the 49-year-old lost control of his vehicle and had a head-on collision with another vehicle.
There was a second collision, which also involved a third vehicle.
The driver of the van left the scene of the accident to return to Shawinigan and was intercepted approaching the intersection of Routes 153 and 157, reports said.
Two people suffered minor injuries and one person was seriously injured. A reconstructionist was dispatched to the scene to analyze the scene.
Mario Rivard was arrested for hit-and-run and driving under the influence, resulting in injuries more than twice the legal limit, the SQ explained.
He was held in custody to appear at the Shawinigan Courthouse and released on conditions Wednesday.
