No! This video does not feature actors who manipulated to impersonate victims of the Russian invasion of Ukraine

“They put on their makeup before they go on stage… So reliable is what the television says…”: These are the words that accompany a video in which we see a group of people having fake blood applied to them. Would the makeup artists who recreate the wounds on the bodies of the clip’s protagonists be complicit in the great global deception that wants us to believe that Russia invaded Ukraine? some users define In fact, the scenes were filmed as “preparation for the war actors” for the realization of productions useful for propaganda purposes. But these theories are completely unfounded, and to prove this it is enough to reconstruct the origin of the images.

For those in a hurry:

  • Against the background of the ongoing conflict between the Moscow and Kiev governments, a video has been circulating on the Internet in recent days in which the victims of the bombings were accused of being actors.
  • In the video, some makeup artists were seen applying fake blood to some people’s bodies, recreating fake wounds.
  • This thesis is part of the conspiracy zone narrative that the war unleashed by the Russian invasion of Ukraine is nothing more than a major fake.
  • This news is fake: The video is from a 2017 Gaza newscast that reported on the work of two local makeup artists. So it has nothing to do with the war of the last few months.

analyses

Here is one of the posts sharing the video and comments between two users, which is helpful in understanding how sharing is perceived and the imaginative connections to the Covid19 pandemic:

Giuseppe: «IT IS SURE THAT THE VACCINE WILL CONTINUE TO BE VICTIMS AND THEY SAY THAT THERE IS ALWAYS A PANDEMIC AND PEOPLE BELIEVE IN IT BECAUSE THEY ARE ALL AFRAID. “

The origin of the video

If we squint a little and focus on the top left corner of the video, we can see the logo of the Gaza Post news site. In fact, the video is from a service that was broadcast by the news in 2017, titled “Film tricks: an art that makes the world look different in Gaza.” The original meaning of the images was actually to enrich the work of makeup artists Abdel Basset El Loulou and Maryam Salah. The latter was also mentioned by the Turkish state broadcaster TRT World to underline her pioneering work and to say that she is one of the few makeup artists in Gaza.

The report also explained that the actors who the makeup artists inflicted with fake wounds were actually participants in a project set up by the French charity Médecins du monde (Doctors of the World) to reduce health inequalities and help the offer to the most vulnerable countries. The confirmation comes from the TRT World service mentioned above, in which we can see the blue logo of Médecins du Monde on the back of two people present at minute 0.16.

Conclusions

Users, who used the images to pretend that the war in Ukraine was just a fiction, used a 2017 video captured in Gaza that focused on the work of two local makeup artists. So, which has nothing to do with the ongoing war: it has been decontextualized.
