Noboa signs decree repatriating foreign prisoners in Ecuador

The President directed the National System for Attention to Persons Deprived of Liberty (SNAI) to carry out all administrative procedures necessary for the deportation of the prisoners.

Recently, Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Gabriela Sommerfeld stated that the government is preparing documentation for the deportation of prisoners of foreign nationality, particularly to Colombia and Peru.

“We are preparing individual letters from each person that we can present to Colombia, have them processed by the Ministry of Justice and finally send them,” said the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility in an interview with broadcaster Ecuavisa.

He explained that there are 1,500 inmates in Ecuadorian penitentiaries from that country alone, another 1,500 from Venezuela and 110 from Peru.

“It’s a pretty significant amount” that Ecuador wants to relocate, he said.

Since President Noboa announced the existence of an internal armed conflict on the 9th of this month, he indicated his intention to expel foreign prisoners; However, this process must be negotiated with the host countries.
