North Korea confirmed the launch of a ballistic missile over the Sea of Japan this morning, saying it was a medium-range missile. This was reported by the Pyongyang news agency KCNA.
According to the KCNA, the missile tested on Sunday afternoon (the morning in Italy) carried a warhead with hypersonic capability with the aim of testing the “maneuverability and gliding characteristics” of the warhead and “the reliability of Pyongyang's new multi-stage medium-range solid fuel carrier” As it fell into the Sea of Japan about 1,000 km from the starting point, it “never threatened the security of neighboring countries” and the test “had nothing to do with the regional situation,” writes the official North Korean agency.
The missile test came just five days after a series of “exercises” in which North Korea's artillery fired live ammunition at islands along the maritime border with South Korea. Seoul responded by firing grenades and cannons in the same area.
