An escalation of tensions. South Korea ordered the evacuation of residents of Yeonpyeong and Baengnyeong Islands near North Korea on Friday, January 5, after North Korea fired around 200 artillery shells off its western coast.
Residents of these two South Korean border islands in the Yellow Sea have been ordered to evacuate, according to local officials. Ferries connecting these islands, which are very close to the North Korean coast, with the rest of South Korea have been suspended. After Pyongyang's artillery shelling, South Korea denounced an “act of provocation,” called on its neighbor to put an end to it and warned that it would respond with “appropriate” measures. The ministry clarified that the shooting caused no casualties or damage.
“Our army is closely monitoring and monitoring the situation”
“We strongly warn that North Korea bears full responsibility for this escalation of the crisis and call on it to immediately stop these measures,” South Korea’s Defense Ministry wrote in a statement. “Our Army is closely monitoring and monitoring the situation in close coordination with the United States,” he added. Hours later, Seoul conducted a live-fire exercise with K9 self-propelled howitzers in Yeonpyeong.
China, an ally of North Korea, called on “all parties to exercise calm and restraint.” This military escalation is one of the most serious on the peninsula since 2010, when the North bombed Yeonpyeong. This follows a series of bellicose statements by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, who in recent days has threatened in particular to “annihilate” South Korea and the United States.
