North Korea fired a shortrange ballistic missile into the Sea of Japan this Sunday (Saturday afternoon, December 31, in Brazil), the South Korean army said, quoted by the Yonhap news agency.

The launch of that missile was the second in a few days and was carried out from the Yongseong region of the capital Pyongyang, the South Korean agency reported.

Military tensions on the Korean Peninsula intensified in 2022, a year in which Pyongyang conducted several ballistic tests, including launching ICBMs.

The North Korean military had previously fired three shortrange missiles on Saturday, a day after the South Korean military launched a solidfuel space rocket.

This week also saw the incursion of three North Korean drones into South Korean airspace.

Monday’s raid was the first such incident in five years and resulted in the deployment of South Korean warplanes and attack helicopters.
