According to South Korea’s Defense Ministry, North Korea fired two ballistic missiles on the night of Monday, July 24 to Tuesday, July 25, just ahead of celebrations marking the end of fighting between the two countries. According to Seoul, the two missiles flew about 400 kilometers before falling into the sea. The White House has condemned these new “ballistic missile launches.” These tests “pose a threat to North Korea’s neighbors and the international community,” said Karine Jean-Pierre, spokeswoman for the White House.

The pre-dawn launch of these two ballistic missiles on Tuesday comes just ahead of celebrations in North Korea to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of fighting in the Korean War (1950-1953). Relations between the two countries, which are still officially at war, are currently at an all-time low, with Kim Jong-un calling for an acceleration in the arms race, including tactical nuclear weapons. In response, Seoul and Washington conducted joint military exercises, angering Pyongyang.
