The North Korean regime held a costly event this week to bring together the country's elites.

The Central Committee of the North Korean Workers' Party met in Pyongyang on Tuesday for a plenary session to discuss policies for the new year.

Despite a ban on luxury goods in the country, the officials arrived in luxurious Mercedes S-Class vehicles.

According to the Yonhap news agency, the United Nations is maintaining sanctions against the sale of luxury vehicles to North Korea.

Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un spoke at the party congress in Pyongyang, where he called 2023 a “year of great turning and great change” and a “year of great significance.”

He said the past year in North Korea has seen “illuminating victories and events in all areas for socialist construction and strengthening national power.”

While North Korea's Supreme Leader was traditionally expected to deliver a speech to the people on New Year's Day, Kim Jong Un has been delivering the annual summary speech at Workers' Party meetings since 2020.
