Strong drugs, cancellations at short notice, regular breaks, but still a full schedule: the Norwegian Crown Princess puttingmaritime faces many challenges.
The 49-year-old was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis in 2018. This disease causes excess connective tissue to build up in the lungs, between the alveoli and around blood vessels, changes that affect gas exchange and blood flow.
Due to illness, Mette-Marit often has to cancel appointments. He recently had to cancel a trip to northern Norway and a trip to Sweden.
Haakon: “It’s a serious diagnosis”
The princess hides her pain when she is in public. This affects the Norwegians, but especially their husband, the crown prince Haakon.
On the occasion of his 50th birthday the king’s son Harold and the queen Sonya spoke to the Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten. When asked about his wife’s health, he replied, “It’s a serious diagnosis and a chronic illness.”
The woman’s condition “varies from time to time.” And he continues: “What is difficult one day can be fine the next.” Mette-Marit has to take heavy medication regularly, which makes her very tired.
Haakon is impressed by Mette-Marit
At the end of the interview with “Aftenposten”, the prince is touched. He admires his wife for her strength and courage: “I’m impressed.”
The situation is not easy for the Norwegian heir to the throne, also because his father Harald is not in good health.
Currently, the monarch only keeps appointments within the castle walls. This means that Haakon has to replace his father more and more frequently.
In addition, the burden of office will fall more and more on the prince in the years to come, as his daughter, Ingrid Alexandrahe is only 19 years old.
