The aim is to be able to land and take off in the event of unavailability of air bases during a high-intensity conflict.

Fighter planes on a highway. After training with the Finnish F-18 Hornet fighter aircraft, two Norwegian F-35 fighter jets landed and took off on a Finnish highway for the first time on Thursday, September 21, the Norwegian Armed Forces reported, transmitted by High North News. The street on which this unusual training took place is in Tervo, in the north of Savo, in the center of the country.

Learning to land and take off on the highway should allow pilots to use alternative runways or infrastructure in the event air bases are attacked in a real conflict.

Nordic military cooperation

This is the first time F35A aircraft have landed on a highway. American pilots had previously carried out such an exercise, albeit with F-35B models.

The Nordic countries regularly cooperate in military exercises. Last month, Norwegian, Finnish and Swedish fighter jets operated together during exercise Arctic Fighter Meet, which took place from Ørland Air Base in central Norway. Last spring, the large-scale Arctic Challenge Exercise was organized in Norway, Finland and Sweden. These two exercises were organized as part of the Nordic Defense Cooperation (NORDEFCO).
