LONDON — Three people were killed in the central English city of Nottingham on Tuesday, police said, adding that they had arrested an unnamed suspect and considered the deaths to be connected.

Police were called to a residential area near the city center just after 4am local time “where two people were found dead in the street,” a statement said. They said another male victim was found dead on a different road about two miles away.

Officials were also responding to a third incident nearby “Where a van tried to run over three people.” They are being treated at a hospital.

Nottinghamshire Police did not provide a motive for the killings but said they had arrested a 31-year-old man on “suspicion of murder”.

“This is a terrible and tragic incident which has resulted in the deaths of three people,” Chief Constable Kate Meynell said in a statement. “We believe these three incidents are all linked and we have one man in custody.”

Meynell urged the public to be patient and said a number of roads in the city would remain closed. “This investigation is still in its early stages and a team of investigators is working to determine exactly what happened,” she added.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called It was a “shocking incident” and thanked the police. “I will be kept informed of developments,” he said. “My thoughts are with the injured and the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives.”

The leader of Britain’s opposition Labor Party, Keir Starmer, also said he was sending his “thoughts to all those affected and to the emergency services who are responding,” the BBC reported.

Nottingham has a population of around 300,000 and is located in the country’s Midlands. The incidents happened in close proximity to the university and the city’s main train station. Pictures showed that police had cordoned off streets in the city center but nearby shops remained open.

“Nottingham is a beautiful city, home to brilliant people from all backgrounds” called local lawmaker Nadia Whittome. “We are devastated by today’s events, but will face them together as a community and heal together.”
