Police rescued a man who narrowly escaped death after being pursued by a giant saltwater crocodile on a popular beach.
The beach bum went for a swim at Nightcliff Jetty in the Northern Territory on Friday night and encountered an adult crocodile after surfacing on a rock bar.
Police were urgently called to the scene around 7:30 p.m. with reports that a man was being pursued by the sizable predator.

Northern Watch Commander Mick Fields stated the man could not return to shore as the crocodile blocked his escape, NT News reported.
“That escape plan was foiled by a rather large, inquisitive adult crocodile chasing him,” he said.
The man was rescued by officers after they managed to free him from the rock bar.
“Members of the water police were called and were able to save the distraught man from becoming dinner,” continued Commander Fields.
The man told officers he ventured to the Felsbar when the tide was out, expecting to return to shore when the tide rose.

Commander Fields warned the public to be aware of the potential dangers of entering the water.
“Fortunately, on this occasion, a situation was narrowly avoided due to the quick response of police members,” he said.
Nightcliff Jetty is particularly popular with fishermen or beach goers enjoying the Top End sunsets.
Crocodiles are often spotted in the area.
