In the mobile market, it is not uncommon for options for the same model to appear a few months after its release, especially from Chinese manufacturers. This also applies to gaming smartphones, as the new Red Magic 8S Pro and 8S Pro+ show.

Nubia
An evolution of the Red Magic 8 Pro released in China at the end of 2022, this new model aims to be one of the most powerful of 2023. While its predecessor was one of the first to come equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, it opts for the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 2.
This boosted version makes it possible to increase the clock speed of the main CPU core from 3.2 to 3.36 GHz and that of the GPU from 680 to 719 MHz. The brand is thus announcing a performance increase of around 5%. A similar result to recent chips labeled “For Galaxy” found in the Galaxy S23 range, but with a more neutral name (Leading Version).
The device is obviously compatible with 5G, Bluetooth 5.3 but also WiFi 7. We also note the presence of a 3.5mm jack and stereo speakers.
A power… useless?
The 4nm chip can be accompanied by 8 to 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM and up to 512GB of UFS 4.0 storage. The 8S Pro+ version goes one step further, integrating up to 24GB of RAM and 1TB of storage. A lot that seems almost ridiculous as you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference on a slightly less well-equipped model. In fact, the software used (games or apps) must be able to manage such an amount of RAM and it is not the case. It is therefore a marketing strategy based on a race for records, which is often the case in this environment.

Nubia Red Magic
To maintain a reasonable temperature, Nubia uses the new version of its ICE 12 cooling system. Composed of a 10-layer heat dissipation system, it benefits from a finned fan capable of reaching 20,000 rpm. The brand explains that this helps maintain a temperature of around 41°C in-game.
The rest of the technical sheet is similar to the model released at the end of 2022. Its dimensions of 164 x 76.4 x 8.9 mm and its weight of 228 g make it a particularly imposing terminal. Without being really subtle (there are still hints of RGB), the monolithic design is quite sober in this segment.
We find the same 6.8-inch AMOLED screen as before. It displays Full HD + (2480 x 1116 pixels) at 120 Hz and is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5. In the photo there is a main Samsung GN5 sensor of 50 Mpx (f/1.9) associated with an ultra wide-angle module (8 Mpx, f/2.2) and a macro module of 2 Mpx (f/2.4). It will therefore undoubtedly be able to take very correct shots during the day, even if it is obviously not sold as a photophone.
The Red Magic 8S Pro has the same sensors as its predecessor.
Nubia Red Magic
The Red Magic 8S Pro still packs a 6000mAh battery compatible with 80W charging. The 8S Pro+ version comes with a “only” 5000mAh battery that supports 165W charging. 14 minutes, according to Nubia. Once again the brand is flexing its muscles, but we regret that the battery has dropped, especially on a primarily portable console.
While the Nubia Red Magic 8S Pro+ is expected to only be available in China, the 8S Pro is expected to land here (likely via Amazon) from July 18, 2023.
The brand has announced prices starting at 4,399 yuan (approx. €560 ex VAT) for the 8 + 256 GB version and up to 5,699 yuan (approx. €720 ex VAT) for the 12 + 512 GB version. Crossing up corrects our boundaries.
