The United States Space Agency (NASA) and the United States Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) announced this Tuesday (January 24) that they will join forces to test nuclearpowered rockets with the aim of transporting astronauts to Mars easier.

The idea is that they will develop the technologies in such a way that by 2027 there will be demonstrations of the project, which would reduce the transit time of rockets make them faster and reduce the risks for astronauts.

“This new technology will enable astronauts to travel into space faster than ever before an important skill in preparing for manned missions to Mars,” said Bill Nelson, NASA Administrator.

It is worth remembering that the last nuclear thermal rocket propulsion tests conducted by the United States were over 50 years ago as part of NASA’s Nuclear Engine for Rocket and Rover Applications projects.

“Recent advances in aerospace materials and engineering are enabling a new era for nuclear technology in space, and this flight demonstration will be a major achievement in creating space transportation capability for an EarthMoon economy,” said Jim Reuter, Associate Administrator Space NASA’s Technology Mission Directorate (STMD).
