The accident
As the Chron reports, 55 Chinese sailors died from lack of oxygen in an accident in the Yellow Sea, just off the coast of China’s Shandong province.
According to a secret British report, the Type 093 (Shang class) submarine, EPL designation “093-417”, became stuck in a trap for American ships, resulting in a failure of the oxygen systems. Among the victims were submarine captain Xue Yong-Peng and 21 officers, as well as 7 officer candidates, 9 non-commissioned officers and 17 sailors.
China officially denied the incident and dismissed the allegations as “completely false.” A similar response came from Taiwan, which said there was no evidence or signs to suggest a submarine accident in the area. However, according to the British report, the tragedy occurred on August 21 during a mission in the Yellow Sea: “In our opinion, the death was caused by hypoxia due to a fault in the submarine’s system.” The submarine crashed into a tracked and anchor obstacle that the Chinese Navy used to trap U.S. and allied submarines. This resulted in system failures that took six hours to repair and surface the ship. The onboard oxygen system poisoned the crew after a catastrophic failure.
The submarine
The Type 093 submarine is considered one of China’s most modern and is known for its extremely low noise levels. This type of submarine, which has been in service for the past 15 years, is almost 107 meters long and armed with torpedoes.
