Warheads in the arsenal of Russia are approx 6 thousandaccording to an Iriad Review report from early 2022. An estimate confirmed by the Federation of American Scientists: the Russians would have more warheads at their disposal than any other country in the world and than all NATO reserves combined.
Vladimir Putin announced that “90% of Russia’s nuclear deterrent is equipped with advanced weapons” and that Moscow would suspend its participation in New Start. But how many nuclear weapons does Russia have?
The payment
According to the latest estimates by the Federation of American Scientists, Moscow has the largest nuclear arsenal in the world, with 5,977 warheads. While the United States would have 5,428. As a result, the US and Russia would own about 90% of the world total of these devastating ordnance. But of the nearly 6,000 Russian nuclear warheads, 1,500 are withdrawn and ready to be dismantled (there would be 1,720 American nuclear warheads withdrawn from arsenals).
And of the remaining 4,500 — the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists reported a year ago — about 1,500 would be those actually deployed in long-range strategic systems, while the remaining 3,000 would be “reserves.” Russia would have 812 on surface-to-air ballistic missiles, 576 on submarine-launched ballistic missiles, and 200 on heavy bomber bases.

The New Start treaty between Russia and the US limits strategic nuclear weapons by capping each of the two states at 1,550 warheads and 700 missiles and bombers. Nuclear weapons are often divided into “strategic” – capable of hitting targets at long range – and “tactical”, and for the latter, estimates by various authorities of Moscow’s arsenal vary widely: from 1,000 to 2,000 warheads, the Washington Post points out, according to which these Weapons can be fired from land, air and sea, but cannot be used preemptively.
According to the Federation of American Scientists, Russia may have 1,912 ordnance of this type, but that number may include weapons that are or are in the process of being phased out. Nuclear warheads are deadly weapons, and even the weakest can kill thousands and thousands of people and render an area uninhabitable for many years.
