Nvidia is partnering with Lucid and BYD for a new autonomous driving platform

Graphic chip giant Nvidia (NVDA) announced on Tuesday the latest self-driving car technology platform, Drive Hyperion 9. Hosting the GTC conference from March 21st to March 24th, EV maker Lucid Motors (LCID) and BYD in China will use Nvidia’s drive platform.

As a result, Nvidia states that it has a revenue pipeline of approximately $ 11 billion over the next six years in the automotive business. The news follows Nvidia’s February announcement that it will introduce AI-powered drive services to all Jaguar Land Rover vehicles in 2025.

“Future cars will be fully programmable and will evolve from many embedded controllers to powerful centralized computers. Software updates will provide AI and AV capabilities and enhance them throughout the life of the car,” Nvidia said. Jen Sung Juan, CEO of the company, said in a statement.

“Nvidia DRIVE Orin has been a huge success in the company that will build this future, serving as the ideal AV and AI engine for the new generation of EVs, robotaxis, shuttles and trucks.”

According to Nvidia, the new Drive Hyperion 9 platform, due out in the vehicle in 2026, will serve as the central nervous system for autonomous driving technology. It is a set of sensors that help the car look around, including 14 cameras, 9 radars, 3 LIDAR sensors, 20 ultrasonic sensors, and 3 cameras and 1 radar. Configure.

Self-driving features are rated on a scale of 0 to 5, where 0 means that the driver controls all sides of the car and 5 means that the car drives itself completely. The chip giant says that the combination of the sensor and its Drive Atlan computer will allow the car to drive to level 4. This means that you can drive yourself under certain conditions. Consider a local self-driving taxi.

Regarding the deal with Lucid, Nvidia said automakers are using the Hyperion platform in their current vehicles and will use them in future vehicles, including the Project Gravity electric SUV, which is scheduled for release in 2024. I am.

Nvidia’s platform not only provides Lucid with advanced driver assistance technology, but also provides wireless updates for onboard systems to ensure improvements over time.

The story continues

“The seamless integration of the software-defined NVIDIA DRIVE platform provides a strong foundation for Lucid to further enhance what DreamDrive can do in the future, all of which can be delivered wirelessly to vehicles,” said Lucid Group’s digital microphones. Bell’s senior vice president statement said.

Meanwhile, BYD says it is building the next generation of EVs on Nvidia’s Hyperion 8 platform.

Nvidia’s automotive division generates very little revenue from its graphics card and data center businesses. Last year, Nvidia reported revenue for the automotive sector of $ 566 million. Meanwhile, the data center and gaming businesses generated $ 10.61 billion and $ 12.46 billion, respectively.

Still, as more companies adopt chipmakers’ products, their automotive business can be as important to revenue as game and data center branches.
