On 8 October 2022, the final of this year’s FIA Region I Best Young Driver Competition took place in Jarama, near Madrid. The international road safety campaign was launched in 2019 specifically for young people and newcomers to driving. Stefan Trimmel (25) from Götzendorf an der Leitha (Lower Austria) secured the sensational first place on behalf of the ÖAMTC. In addition to several non-cash prizes, he wins two VIP tickets to the Italian Formula 1 Grand Prix. Victor Sima (25) from Vienna also managed to score and took third place behind Urban Ostrez from Slovenia. “Driving skills are fun and increase road safety – a win-win situation. This FIA competition targets and motivates exactly those who will be important in the future if we are to achieve safe cooperation on the road and avoid accidents.” , says ÖAMTC Director Oliver Schmerold.
A total of 17 participants from FIA partner clubs (Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Netherlands, Spain, Great Britain and Austria) aged between 18 and 26 participated in teams of two on Saturday in Spain. In addition to conducting safety competitions, participants had to show that they could keep a cool head and know how to react even in simulated emergency situations.
About the FIA Region I Best Young Driver Competition
The FIA Region I Best Young Driver Competition was created as a road safety competition to bring safe driving closer to young drivers. In the first stage, participating partner clubs use preliminary decisions to determine the most capable drivers in their country who will start in the respective organization’s team in the FIA competition. On the day of the competition, participants can prove their skills behind the wheel, which above all includes the safe handling of the vehicle in emergency situations. Young drivers need to use multiple stations to demonstrate that they can take the right steps in an emergency, including minimizing damage and driving in challenging situations.
