Two-time Ohio State Big Ten wrestling champion Sammy Sasso was shot in Columbus and was hospitalized Saturday with non-life-threatening injuries, the university’s wrestling coach said in a statement.

Police say they received a call about a shooting near the university district around 8:30 p.m. Friday, The Columbus Dispatch reported. Sasso was found in an alleyway near campus and taken to Ohio State University’s Wexner Medical Center in serious condition, the newspaper reported.

Coach Tom Ryan said in the statement that Sasso was being monitored in hospital on Saturday.

“Our coaching staff, as well as members of the wrestling program and athletics administrators, are grateful for the support staff at WMC, grateful that Sasso’s injuries are not life threatening and supporting Sasso and his family,” Ryan said in the statement.

According to the statement, the Ohio State University Police Department is assisting the Columbus Police Department with the ongoing investigation.

Few details were known about the shooting. According to some reports, it was related to an attempted robbery, the Dispatch reported, and no suspects were taken into custody.

Sasso, from Nazareth, Pennsylvania, was a fifth grader last season and is a two-time NCAA runner-up.

He just wrapped up his redshirt senior season and was named the Big Ten Champion for a second time.

Last year he achieved 29-4 overall and 8-0 in the conference, which he won for the first time in 2021.
