Famous for Grease and the role of Sandy opposite John Travolta

Olivia Newton-John, the Australian singer and actress who starred opposite John Travolta in Grease, has died at the age of 73. Ms. Olivia Newton-John, 73, died peacefully this morning at their Southern California ranch surrounded by family and friends, her husband John Easterling announced on their official Facebook page. We ask everyone to respect the privacy of the family at this very difficult time.

An icon of a generation, Olivia has battled breast cancer for more than 30 years. Though the exact causes of death are unknown, a source close to the actress told TMZ, After 30 years of traveling against cancer, she has lost her battle.

The actress and singer announced in September 2018 that she was being treated for spinal cancer, her third diagnosis after undergoing two treatments for breast cancer in the 1990s and 2017. Olivia Newton John was already a country singer when she was called next in 1978 John Travolta to play Sandy, a cute Aussie student who moved to the United States and has fallen in love with her favorite schoolmate Danny in order to win him over, whom she wears in a triumphant finale of her decent attire for a spandex suit, nails and high Heels gives up. Grease is perhaps the most popular musical of all time, and with its depiction of the 1950s it was a key part of introducing fashion to nostalgic backdrops.

According to historian Joel Whitburn, Newton-John was the most successful female lead singer of the 1970s when she managed to chart nine top 10 singles, three of them topping the charts. Among them, the most famous is You’re the One That I Want, the duet with John Travolta based on the Grease soundtrack. Newton-John remained a strong commercial force well into the next decade. In 1981 he released Physical, the biggest hit of his career. And the box-office flop of another musical film, Xanadu, became a chart-topping triumph: the soundtrack went double platinum and spawned three singles, including Magic, an authentic radio hit of the time. The golden age ended in the early ’90s, but Newton-John has remained a popular artist in the new millennium, largely thanks to the evergreen fortunes of Grease, a true cult following for millions of fans around the world.
