Olivia Rodrigo is embarking on the second tour of her rapid career with her new album “Guts”. The migration begins in California in February and stretches through North America for six weeks before moving to Europe. It then returns to North America in May before ending in Rodrigo’s native Los Angeles on August 14th.
The tour features an inspired selection of supporting acts, all female and three of them young: British dance-pop singer PinkPantheress; LA-based pop singer Chappell Roan, whose debut album drops next week; Californian pop-rock singer Remi Wolf on all European dates; and veteran alternative rock band The Breeders, led by former Pixies singer Kim Deal, best known for the string of radio and video hits from their 1993 album Last Splash. The latter choice seems unusual, but it actually fits Rodrigo’s brand: During Rodrigo’s debut tour last year, the singer covered the Veruca Salt song “Seether” from the same period, which she told the audience “came out before I did.” was born,” except her mom introduced her. The Breeders can only be seen on the New York and Los Angeles dates.
Rodrigo performed “Vampire” and “Get Him Back!” at the MTV Video Music Awards on Tuesday night, joining Lil Wayne as the second performer of the night. It was her second-ever appearance on the show, as Rodrigo made her 2021 VMAs debut when she performed her Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit “Good 4 U.”
“Guts” was released on September 8th via Geffen Records to critical acclaim and had two top 10 singles, “Vampire” and “Bad Idea Right?”. “Vampire” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, making Rodrigo the youngest artist to debut three No. 1 hits on the chart behind “Drivers License” and “Good 4 U.”
In an interview with Capital FM in England, Rodrigo said she wrote many of the songs on Guts with the concept of an accompanying tour “in mind.”
“I think there are a lot of fun songs,” she said. “I wrote the album with a tour in mind, so I think all of the songs are songs that I wanted people in the crowd to be able to scream. Hopefully it’s successful.” A similar teaser – in the form of a fake ticket to “Olivia Rodrigo: Guts The World Tour” – appeared in a lyric video for “Making the Bed”, the sixth track from “Guts”.
Rodrigo most recently toured North America and Europe in 2022 in support of her debut album “Sour”. It began on April 5th in Portland and ended on July 7th in London. The opening acts included Gracie Abrams, Holly Humberstone, Chappell Roan and Baby Queen.
