Olymel’s management announced in a press release on Wednesday that the closure of the evening shift at its Vallée-Jonction slaughterhouse is being brought forward by almost two months due to staff shortages.

The company said the evening shift is expected to cease operations in mid-September, but will close from July 22 due to labor availability issues. The 260 employees working there will be assigned to the day shift once they return from vacation on August 7th.

Olymel also mentions that on June 1st a retention bonus agreement was signed with the workers’ union to ensure continued operations until the plant closes next December. The company recalls that a voluntary relocation plan and redeployment committee have been set up for employees.

The management of Olymel has indicated that “all these measures are aimed not only at adapting to a changing work situation, but also at respecting the slaughter volume envisaged in the agreement signed last April with Quebec pig farmers.” »
