HOSPITAL – A cliché that is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. In late October, the Halloween party for nurses can be a painful time. “The eroticization of the profession is socially and professionally unacceptable. It’s about time perceptions changed about nurses pursuing a career in science,” Luc Mathieu, himself a nurse and president of the Order of Quebec Nurses, said on Twitter.

As Halloween approaches, a campaign has been launched to “get people to think more critically about how nurses are portrayed. In a spot aired on YouTube, Quebec nurses are encouraging people to wear a real nurse’s costume with gloves, visor and gown instead, to pay tribute to the profession.

This eroticism “devalues their profession and expertise,” according to the Order’s press release published on February 24. “The profession has evolved, but the stereotypes remain,” laments Luc Mathieu in the document. “The choice offered in store or online is scary! The eroticization of the profession is socially and professionally unacceptable,” he argues.

This message appears in the video: “Caregivers care about our world. Take care of her image”, seen several thousand times on social networks since the beginning of the week. This speech is part of a more global movement to advance this highly responsible profession, which requires rigor, vigilance and expertise.
