One Briton killed in Ukraine, another missing

According to British media, the Brit killed is a British Army veteran, Scott Sibley. Both nationals fought as volunteers against Russian forces.

A Briton has been killed in Ukraine and another is missing, a spokesman for the British Foreign Office said on Thursday. The ministry did not identify them but said authorities were supporting their families and were “urgently seeking further information” about the missing person.

According to British media, the Brit killed is a British Army veteran, Scott Sibley. His former comrades paid tribute to him on a Facebook page and a donation page was set up. According to British media, the two nationals fought as volunteers against Russian forces. Shortly after Russia invaded his country on February 24, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for the formation of an “international legion” of foreign volunteers to help him defend Ukraine.

British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss initially appeared to support the British who wanted to go to the front. But it had been reworded by the Secretary of Defense and military officials. “We discourage travel to Ukraine and anyone traveling to conflict zones to engage in illegal activities should expect to face criminal prosecution on their return to the UK,” a Defense Ministry spokesman confirmed to AFP.
