The gunman opened fire shortly before 9:30 p.m., killing one and wounding the other victims, including at least three teenagers
Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Theetge told NBC News she was “angry” about the tragedy.
“This happens too often.” People resort to armed violence instead of resolving disputes in a humane way. “It is inhumane to pull out a firearm and shoot people recklessly,” she said.
Theetge stressed that there was no major threat to the public and that officers were working last night to notify the victims’ next of kin.
“We are gathering all the evidence to bring these people to justice,” Theetge added. “It is unacceptable that six people are shot in our city on a Friday evening.”
Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval urged the public to pray for the city.
“A terrible tragedy occurred in the West End this evening. Children were shot. At least one life was lost. “Our friends and neighbors are feeling unimaginable fear, trauma and anger,” he said.
“Right now I ask for your prayers. We will keep you updated as our officers continue their investigation. But I promise this: We will do everything we can to bring justice to this disgusting, heartless violence.”
