A leak this Saturday caused about a million liters of palm oil to spill into the Seca stream that flows through Santa Perpètua de Mogoda (Barcelona), civil protection sources said. The burial, of which the emergency services were informed after 11:00 a.m., occurred for unknown reasons in a silo belonging to the company Lípidos Santiga, SA (LIPSA) on Ripollet Street.

A team from the Generalitat Fire Brigade’s collapsed building group traveled to the industry to ensure the plant’s silo was not in danger of collapsing. The spilled oil is non-toxic and no injuries were reported in the incident. Due to this event, the City Council of Santa Perpètua activated the Municipal Emergency Plan.

The city council reports in a statement that members of the local police and employees of the Catalan Water Authority (ACA) are working to prevent the leak from reaching the yellowed Seca stream to the Besòs river. “Agents are also investigating other possible effects” of this spill, the note said.

For their part, the rural agents who worked on site have assured that “there is no disturbance to the Besòs River” and that no “fauna mortality has been detected”.
