One person in critical condition following a fire in Montreal

One person was seriously injured in a fire that ripped through a home in east Montreal on Wednesday evening.

The flames began at around 6:20 p.m. in a residential building on St-Donat Street in the Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve district.

When firefighters arrived, they found an unconscious victim in the home. They were able to take her outside and begin resuscitation maneuvers, explained Kevin Francoeur, division manager – prevention at the Montreal Fire Safety Service (SIM).

The victim was then treated by paramedics and taken to the Maisonneuve-Rosemont hospital. His condition is considered critical, Mr. Francoeur said.

The cause of the incident remained unclear in the evening. Under these circumstances, the Montreal Police Fire Department will be responsible for the investigation.

When firefighters arrived, no smoke alarms were functioning, noted Kevin Francoeur, who took the opportunity to remind Montrealers of the importance of checking the functionality of their smoke alarms.
