‘Only three months to live’: World’s largest dog amputated to survive cancer

Voted the world’s tallest dog by Guinness World Records, the Great Dane had to have its right front leg amputated to survive bone cancer. Veterinarians only gave him three months to live without the procedure.

Despite his young age, three-year-old Zeus had to go under the knife on Friday to have his right front leg amputated to prevent the spread of his aggressive bone cancer, American media reported.

In total, the removed leg weighed 11 pounds, according to the New York Post.

“The doctor said it couldn’t have gone better. […] He’s awake from the anesthesia and taking a lot of painkillers, but he’s fine. After the surgery, they dressed the patients in a t-shirt, but they didn’t have one big enough for Zeus, so his oncologist literally gave his own t-shirt,” the woman said on a crowdfunding page to help meet vet bills pay.

Standing at 90cm tall on four legs – 2.10m standing – the dog made headlines last year by becoming the tallest dog in the world according to Guinness World Records.

The Great Dane, which is reported to consume 12 cups of dog food a day, is big enough to drink water straight from the kitchen faucet, the New York Post reported.
