In the country described in the national anthem itself as the “land of the free,” a presidential candidate said he would not consider becoming a dictator if elected, except on the first day of his term.
Donald Trump didn't take part in the Republican primary debates because he considers them a “waste of time.” In short, he is a candidate who believes democratic debate is useless and who vows never to be a dictator, except for one day.
Now this promise, which is supposed to have a reassuring effect, ends up being a bit worrying. Not being a dictator for all but one day is a commitment on the same scale as “I will be a vegetarian except when it comes to steak” or “I will always be a virgin except on Sundays.”
It's like a chef telling us, “I only made the cake with a little cyanide.” Or an airline pilot saying, “Don't worry, I took the entire course, I just missed the landing courses.”
In 2017, filmmaker Michael Moore said at a rally in New York that Trump was “influenced by comedy.” Addressing the audience, he appealed: “If you mock him, if you ridicule him or simply show that he is not popular… I tell you, my friends, he will implode. That’s his Achilles heel.” . Everyone here has a sense of humor. Use it. Join in the mockery and satire against the king who takes off his clothes. Let’s form a comedy army and defeat him.”
I don't know if they paid attention to what happened next, but the comedy didn't bring down Donald Trump, who ruled undisturbed until the end of his term. It would actually be a bit strange if the people democratically elected a president and then a group of comedians managed to force him out of office.
I really appreciate comedy, but I don't want to live in this hypothetical and frankly bizarre comedy. What brought down Trump was new elections, as is usual in democracies.

In the upcoming presidential election, Americans must decide whether to democratically elect a candidate who promises to become a dictator. And democratically electing a dictator is a similar option to hiring the devil to say mass, which is a most comical decision.
In that sense, it's interesting that comedy doesn't bring down Donald Trump. She chooses him.
