Critics are raving about Oppenheimer, the drama about the scientist thought to be the father of the atomic bomb, after it premiered in Paris on Tuesday.
Journalists who saw the film shared their rave reviews of the film on Twitter. One reviewer described how the film “cracked my brain” and “made me sob ’till the end credits.”
Oppenheimer features an all-star cast and is led by Cillian Murphy, who plays theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, who helped design the bomb. Directed by Christopher Nolan, the film also features a cast that includes Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr. and Matt Damon.
Film critic Robbie Collin of The Telegraph gushed on Twitter: “I’m torn between being shy and secretive about Oppenheimer and just coming out and saying it’s an absolute banger that cracked my brain like a twitching plutonium nucleus and left me sobbing ’til the credits roll.’ like I can’t even remember anything else.’
He teased plenty of sex scenes, too: “And for everyone who’s complained about the lack of sex in Christopher Nolan’s earlier work… boy oh boy are you getting sex like only Nolan could direct in this movie?”

Vulture Film’s critic Bilge Ebiri gushed, “OPPENHEIMER is…amazing.” The word that keeps coming to mind is “terrifying.” “A relentlessly fast-paced, insanely detailed and complex historical drama that just keeps growing until Nolan brings down the gavel in the most amazing and harrowing way.”
The Sunday Times’ Jonathan Dean called the film “bold” and “inventive” and also expressed some criticism of the use of the female characters.
“Absolutely immersed in OPPENHEIMER, a dense, suspenseful talkie that’s part about the bomb, but mostly about how doomed we are. Happy summer! Murphy is good but support is essential: Damon, Downey Jr & Ehrenreich even bring gags. “A bold, imaginative and complex film that unsettles its audience,” he posted.
‘The disadvantage? Women are poorly served — Emily Blunt only comes out of her stressed mother role once. “But it goes straight into my Nolan top three alongside Memento & The Prestige,” he added.
Associated Press writer Lindsey Bahr was also intrigued.

Total Film’s Matt Maytum was also blown away by the drama.

Meanwhile, Variety’s Elsa Keslassy tweeted, “A sign that French audiences loved #Oppenheimer is that they stayed outside the Grand Rex theater long after the film finished debating it!”

Oppenheimer was the head of the laboratory that designed the atomic bomb during World War II as part of the top-secret Manhattan Project.
The film is based on the 2006 book American Prometheus: The Triumph And Tragedy Of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin.
The Pulitzer Prize-winning book details Oppenheimer’s personal life and his time leading the Manhattan Project in the early and mid-1940s.
Oppenheimer will be released in the US on July 21, 2023.
