Orban, stop Kiev’s accession to the EU, European unity is in danger News Ansa.it

“Ukraine’s accession to the EU does not coincide with Hungary’s national interests. It is foreseeable that there will be no agreement and then European unity will collapse,” said Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban in an interview with Kossuth Rádió.

“Unity can be defended by avoiding putting issues on the agenda on which there is no agreement,” the prime minister said, suggesting that the discussion on the start of negotiations at the EU should take place in Kiev.

Hungary will not veto Kiev’s accession to the EU because it is not even in favor of putting it on the agenda, Orban explained, specifying that the country cannot be a member of the EU because “we don’t even know how big its territory is “how many people live there,” nor is there “information about how much money Ukraine would receive from where and from whom.”

The Hungarian Prime Minister mentioned the conclusion of a strategic partnership agreement with Kiev as a possible compromise. That agreement, he added, “could take up to five to 10 years to bring closer together as the gap is now too wide.”
