Canada’s Governor General Mary Simon announced 85 appointments and some promotions within the Order of Canada on Wednesday.

Stacey Ann Allaster, the former CEO of the Women’s Tennis Players Association (WTA), received the highest award as Companion of the Order “for her pioneering contributions to promoting gender equality in women’s professional tennis and for her passionate mentorship in the sports management industry.

Among the 13 new officer appointments are former sprinter and Olympic gold medalist Donovan Bailey, director and screenwriter Francois Girard and actress Sandra Oh.
Eventually, Ms. Simon selected 71 new members, including photographer Bernard Brault – formerly of La Presse, storyteller Fred Pellerin, McCord Museum President Suzanne Sauvage, and actress Guylaine Tremblay.

This cohort is also being shaped by several new Aboriginal members, including Judge Marion R. Buller of British Columbia, as well as elders from Calgary and the Tobique First Nation of New Brunswick.
“Today’s nominees represent a variety of sectors, have achieved national and international success, and demonstrated ingenuity, innovation and generosity,” said Ms. Simon, quoted in the press release announcing the appointments. “More importantly, these individuals have improved the quality of life in their communities and Canada through their exemplary service and dedication. »
