There will be no more “what if …?” scripts for Ordinary Joe: NBC canceled the drama starring James Walk after only one season, reports our sister site Deadline.
With an average total of 3.3 million viewers and a 0.5 demo rating (in Live + 7 numbers), it ranked last in both measures among the 10 dramas broadcast by NBC this TV season.
The series explores the three parallel lives of the show’s protagonist, Joe (Walk), after he made a crucial choice at a crossroads in his life. In one timeline, Joe met Amy (Natalie Martinez) after they graduated from college and the two married as he became a rock star. In another reality, Joe and his best friend Jenny (Elizabeth Lyle) were husband and wife, and he worked as a nurse to support their son’s medical needs. In the third “what if?” Joe becomes a cop and reconnects with Amy as an adult.
In the finale on January 24, which now doubles as the end of the series, all three Joe found themselves at a romantic crossroads. After cleaning his car and nearly dying, Music Joe went into rehab, but didn’t stay there long. At the end of the finale, he came to Jenny’s door and told her he wanted to live … with her. Cop Joe, meanwhile, impulsively proposed marriage to Amy after she announced she was moving to Miami to lead her mother’s campaign, and nurse Joe surprised Jenny in Atlanta, where he asked her to renew her vows. He didn’t know that Barrett had also made a big offer to Jenny: to stay in Atlanta and start a business with him.
In post-mortem questions and answers, co-showrunner Russell Friend told TVLine that Music Joe “really hit rock bottom” and “wasn’t in a very good place” when he went to Jenny’s.
“He believes at the moment that this is the right thing to do, that maybe Jenny can be the solution to all his problems and this panacea.” [like]”If I chose her, everything would be better,” said a friend. “Our point of view is that he is authentic, passionate and genuine about this choice, and he really believes that he loves Jenny and he should have done that. But whether he is really in the right mood to make these big life decisions is the bigger question. We love this ambitious aspect of this and where can this go?
Meanwhile, Amy and Cop Joe would have their own romantic dilemma after his impromptu proposal. “Maybe they’re moving to Miami?” Maybe they have something in the long run? “A friend said, adding that he hoped the cliffhanger” encouraged the audience to want to see more. “
Friend also hoped that the streaming performance of the Peacock and Hulu show would help him secure a second season.
