Orio, Russian bricklayer arrested with fake Ukrainian passport: ‘I was terrified of war’

«I just want to work, I fled Russia because in my village and other villages they make us conscripted, and I don’t want to fight, I’m afraid of war».

That’s the gist of what he said Friday December 16thduring the direct negotiation a 32-year-old Russian bricklayer (we are skipping details in order to protect his personal safety) was arrested by border police at Orio al Serio Airport on Thursday with a forged document. In fact he used a Ukrainian passport bought in Turkeya garish and odd choice, but with a precise explanation. Traveling with Ukrainian identity– he explained in the classroom -, there are fewer difficulties and fewer restrictions, and then he had seen on the Internet that in Norway some companies offer Ukrainian citizens a quick way to get hired.

The man was sentenced to one year and four months probation. The arrest was confirmed and his release ordered without action. He risked 3 to 10 years, but the judge assumed the minimum sentence and acknowledged the mitigating circumstances: being on the run from possible conscription to war, plus the fact that he had a clean record and the target was one find a job.
