A 50-year-old Orthodox Jew was seriously injured with a knife on a Zurich street. The background and course of events are being investigated.
In Zurich, on Saturday night, an Orthodox Jew was seriously injured with a sharp weapon in the street. As the police announced on Sunday, a 15-year-old Swiss man was arrested as a suspect. “The ongoing investigations by the Zurich cantonal police and the public prosecutor's office responsible for youth go in all directions and explicitly include the possibility of an anti-Semitic crime,” the police said.
The person attacked is a 50-year-old man. The police were called that night because of an argument between several people. The background and exact course of events were still being investigated on Sunday.
The man's condition has stabilized, wrote Zurich local councilor Jehuda Spielman, who says he knows the person attacked, on Platform X. The general secretary of the Israeli community association, Jonathan Kreutner, appeared shocked on Swiss television. “It is very rare for there to be physical attacks on Jews in Switzerland. A case like this is really a new dimension.” According to police, security precautions at Jewish institutions in Zurich have been reinforced. (APA/dpa)
