Barbie stars Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie could both be nominated for acting awards
Nominations for the 2024 Oscars will be announced on Tuesday, after a big year in cinema that saw Barbie and Oppenheimer dominate the box office.
Poor Things, The Holdovers and Killers of the Flower Moon are also expected to feature heavily when nominations are announced from 1:30pm GMT.
Cillian Murphy, Emma Stone, Robert Downey Jr and Da'Vine Joy Randolph are all expected to receive acting nominations.
Jimmy Kimmel will host this year's ceremony on March 10 from Los Angeles.
The Barbenheimer phenomenon, a viral trend that led to thousands of fans booking tickets to both films on the same day last summer, is making this year's Oscars far more accessible than usual.
While several Academy Awards in recent years have honored films that have had little breakthrough with mainstream audiences, producers hope that the likely inclusion of Barbie and Oppenheimer will lead to a surge in interest and viewership.
Which films are competing for best film?

Oppenheimer, starring Emily Blunt and Cillian Murphy, will likely receive the most nominations
After a rule change a few years ago that was intended to expand the field, there are now guaranteed 10 spots available in the Best Picture category.
There is general consensus on this Oppenheimer, Barbie, Poor Things, Killers of the Flower Moon And The leftovers will evaluate all nominations.
Anatomy of a Fall, Maestro, The Zone of Interest, Past Lives And American fiction are also considered hot favorites and will most likely compete for the academy's most prestigious prize.
But there are many other candidates who could easily secure nominations in the top category, such as The Color Purple, Society of the Snow, All of Us Strangers And May December.
Who is in the running for acting?

Maestro stars Carey Mulligan and Bradley Cooper are likely to secure leading actress nominations
After a slightly weaker field in 2023, the best actor category is extremely crowded and competitive this year.
is the front runner Paul Giamatti for “The Holdovers,” a film in which he plays a grumpy teacher who has to stay at his boarding school over Christmas to supervise students who don't go home for the holidays.
Cillian Murphy is also in the running with its portrayal of the theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer Bradley Cooper was honored for his performance as composer Leonard Bernstein in “Maestro”.
Meanwhile Rustin's Colman Domingo is a strong candidate for his portrayal of civil rights activist Bayard Rustin and Jeffrey Wright was known for his role as a frustrated author in American Fiction.
Other possible but somewhat less likely contenders include the Killers of the Flower Moon star. Leonardo DiCaprio, Saltburns Barry Keoghan, The Iron Claw Zac Efron And Andrew Scott for all of us strangers.

Killers of the Flower Moon's Lily Gladstone (pictured with co-star Leonardo DiCaprio) is a sure-fire winner for Best Actress
The Best Actress category is just as busy. Lily Gladstone is probably best known for her role in Killers of the Flower Moon as an Osage woman living in 1920s Oklahoma who has to deal with white settlers' efforts to exploit her land for oil extraction.
“Poor Things” star Emma Stone will almost certainly be nominated for her portrayal of an infant whose brain is transplanted into the body of an adult woman, who then goes on an adventure around the world.
Sandra Hueller may be known for playing a mother accused of murdering her husband in Anatomy of a Fall during Maestros Carey Mulligan may be one of the few British nominees for her portrayal of Leonard Bernstein's wife Felicia Montealegre.
The academy can certainly include Margot Robbie Past Lives was a star for Barbie, the monster box office hit she also produced Greta Lee for her role as a woman who reconnects with her childhood sweetheart, Nyad Annette Bening for her portrayal of record-breaking swimmer Diana Nyad.
There's also still a chance that “The Color Purple” will play the lead role Fantasy Barrino could do it, just like Priscillas Cailee Spaeny for her portrayal of Priscilla Presley.
What about the supporting categories?

Da'Vine Joy Randolph dominated its predecessors, including the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards
The Holdovers star Da'Vine Joy Randolph is the safest bet of all the acting categories – she's dominated at all the prequel ceremonies and will most likely win Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars.
She could be joined in the category by star “The Color Purple”. Danielle BrooksOppenheimers Emily BluntNyads Jodie Foster and Ferraris Penelope Cruz.
Other possible nominations include: Julianne Moore from May to December, Saltburn's Rosamund Pike and Barbies America Ferrera.
The supporting actor race will almost certainly be led by Oppenheimer Robert Downey Jr. But there is competition from Barbie Ryan Gosling, American fiction Sterling K Brown and May December Charles Melton.
Meanwhile, two actors from Poor Things – Mark Ruffalo And Willem Dafoe – could be detected, and it's never a good idea to bet against it Robert De Nirowho appeared in Killers of the Flower Moon.
What about the directors?

Anatomy of a Fall director Justine Triet with her Golden Globes for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Screenplay
Several Oscar stars have films released this year and will almost certainly appear in this category – such as Martin Scorsese for Killers of the Flower Moon and Christopher Nolan for Oppenheimer.
There could also be recognition for this Greta Gerwig for Barbie, Jonathan Glazer for the zone of interest and Yorgos Lanthimos for poor things.
Otherwise stains could occur Justine Triet for Anatomy of a Fall, Alexander Payne for The Holdovers, Bradley Cooper for Maestro and possibly even Celine song for her successful directorial debut Past Lives.
Two of the last three Best Director winners have been women – although last year there were only male nominees.
Why is the best original song so crowded?

Billie Elish and Finneas could repeat their Golden Globe win at the Oscars
In a word, Barbie. The film's soundtrack was almost as ubiquitous last summer as the film itself.
Three different songs from the film are in the running for the music award this year: Billie Eilish“What was I made for?” Dua Lipa“Dance the Night” and “I'm Just Ken” performed by the actor Ryan Gosling.
However, according to Oscar rules, only two songs from the same film can be nominated – so at least one of the songs mentioned above will not be nominated.
The remaining spots could be occupied by people like Lenny Kravitz Road to Freedom by Rustin and It Never Went Away by American Symphony, written by Jon Batiste and Dan Wilson from the US rock group Semisonic.
But don't bet against the competition from songs from the soundtracks of The Color Purple, Flora and Son, Flamin' Hot and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes – the latter were impressive Olivia Rodrigo nominated for Can't Catch Me Now.
